2015 Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
2015 featured bountiful winter and spring rainfall, and little rain from November until mid-March. However, high winds at flowering led to very low crops of Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Like all Woodlands wines, our Cabernet Merlot is produced solely from the Wilyabrup Valley subregion of Margaret River. We felt that this vintage was the right time to bring the subregion to the forefront of the label – so it’s a new look, but same consistency of place.
This wine was harvested in small batches from 6th of March to the 12 of April. This is our first Cabernet blend released using our new receiving equipment -utilising only gravity and vibration. Our hopper lifts the fruit in the air before gently shaking the bunches into our destemmer, which in turn removes the stems by swinging a cage from side to side. This process is much more gentle on the fruit, and has the added advantage that shot berries, dry grapes and unripe grapes remain on the stems (and out of the wine).
This wine is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec that has matured in French oak barrels for 14 months.
The colour is an intense crimson. The nose shows dark cherry, blackberry, and plum combined with toasty French oak and hints of rum and raison. The palate reveals layers of red berry fruits combining with fine gentle tannins, and finishing cool.
Showing lovely balance all through, this wine will be enjoyed most from 2019 to 2025.
What Huon Hooke thinks – 90 pts.
Deep, youthful purple/red colour and a floral, violet-packed aromatic bouquet. The tannins are very tight and slightly sappy, a little on the green side of the ledger, and there’s a hint of bitterness on the follow-through. Decent cabernet.
