2013 was a vintage in which we were able to pick at leisure- given the dry conditions over vintage. Crops were low due to high winds at flowering, but the remainder of the growing season was warm, dry and consistent.
Woodlands ‘Margaret’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion comes from a slope on the south of Woodlands that wraps around a 90-degree radius from east to north. The fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon, leading to rich full-bodied wines. The Merlot and Malbec plots that make up the remainder of ‘Margaret’ come from our west-facing slope of deep loam soil. This slope receives the most direct afternoon sunlight at Woodlands, and produces more exotic fruit characters in the finished wine.
This wine was hand picked in small batches from the 7th to 27th March. Following harvest, the fruit was destemmed, hand sorted, crushed and fermented in small stainless steel fermenters. Following fermentation, the Cabernet Sauvignon portions remained on skins for 34 days for added complexity and tannin integration. Once fermentation was complete this wine was transferred into French oak where it remained for 18 months. 50% percent of the barrels used to mature this wine were new.
Our 2013 ‘Margaret’ is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and 11% Malbec. Bright crimson in colour, the nose is dominated by its Cabernet Sauvignon component- blackcurrant, black olive, mulberry, and cassis combining with fine-grained French oak notes. The palate is fine, dense and concentrated– ripe red and dark berry fruits, succulent middle palate, and plush tannin. Characteristic of the power and charm of the 2013 vintage, this wine reminds us most of the 2003.
Our 2013 ‘Margaret’ will be best enjoyed from 2020 to 2033.
