2010 was an almost perfect growing season for Margaret River Chardonnay. There was excellent rainfall after flowering, and dry warm weather all summer. We believe the excellent ripening conditions are reflected in the vibrancy and balance of our 2010 whites.
Our “Chloe” is produced from a two-acre plot located at the north-east corner of the Woodlands vineyard. The plot lies at the top of a south facing slope, and the soil is comprised of deep loam topsoil over clay. This plot is the most shaded location on our vineyard- protected on the west, north and east with marri and peppermint trees. We feel that the wine is provided with excellent natural acidity from its shaded location, and rich fruit weight from deep loam soils.
The ‘Chloe’ winemaking in 2010 differed a little from previous years. Previously all the fruit was destemmed and crushed before being pressed. In 2010 half the fruit was pressed as whole bunches. The process of whole bunch pressing the fruit leads to a more fine and delicate wine, which we feel adds another dimension to our 2010 ‘Chloe’.
After cold settling in tank for 7 days, the clear juice was racked into French barrels, of which one third were new. Fermentation proceeded quickly and cleanly. Following fermentation the wine remained in barrel, with the lees stirred once every month. This wine was bottled in January 2011 after 11 months in barrel.
This wine has an intense pale straw colour. The nose shows struck flint, stone fruits and fine-grained French oak. The palate is long and delicate – displaying a complex mix of stone and tropical fruits, spice, and an excellent fine texture. The wine finishes with vibrant natural acidity.
Our 2010 ‘Chloe’ will be best enjoyed from 2014 – 2020.
