2001 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Kevin’

Each year we name our Cabernet Sauvignon after a family member or friend. This year our Cabernet is called ‘Kevin’ after Kevin Cullen, a great family friend, lover of wine, tennis, and music.

Our 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon marks a return to the Woodlands tradition. The wine is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec. The wine comes from our oldest vines which are dry grown, low yielding, and planted on a south facing aspect which Woodlands sought  in 1973 as the only such terroir in Margaret River.

2001 was a near perfect growing season in Margaret River. Long ripening days and an extended dry summer ensured balanced wines of integrity and flavour across all vineyards in the region, and particularly the Wilyabrup sub region. We at Woodlands believe 2001 to be Margaret River’s greatest ever vintage.

Our 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon was hand picked at 14 beaume on a warm afternoon in early April. After harvest, the fruit was crushed into open fermenters where it was hand plunged during fermentation at temperatures ranging from 20 degrees to 27 degrees Celsius. Following primary fermentation the wine was pressed before being transferred into closed fermenters to undergo malolactic fermentation. Following the fermentation process the wine spent 27 months in new French oak barrels.

This wine has a dark intense rich purple colour. The bouquet reveals layers of fantastically concentrated brooding cassis and red-berry fruit, with hints of vanilla, coffee bean and Margaret River mint. This is a serious wine, showing a core of rich ripe fruit and a dense middle palate, with cedery oak integrating to provide a great tannin structure for extended aging. Great acid balance provides the wine with a lengthy finish that goes on and on.

Still tight and reserved, this wine shows lovely refinement all though and is characteristic of our great Cabernet Sauvignons of the later 1980’s. Peak drinking from 2007 to 2021.
