69% Cabernet Sauvignon
Woodlands ‘Margaret’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion comes from a slope on the south of Woodlands that wraps around a 90 degree radius from east to north. The fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon, leading to rich full-bodied wines.
The Merlot and Malbec plots that make up the remainder of the ‘Margaret’ come from our west-facing slope of deep loam soil. This slope receives the most direct afternoon sunlight at Woodlands, and produces more exotic fruit characters in the finished wine.
Margaret River reds from 2009 have been stellar across the board. From November a wave of hot weather moved across the region, aided by cool southerly winds that kept temperatures down at night. From December onwards there was consistent warm weather– all our 2009 wines are perfectly ripe at 13.5% alcohol.
The fruit for this wine was hand picked in mid-March before being sorted, destemmed and crushed into small closed fermenters. Ferments proceeded quickly; with the fermenting must being pumped over 4 times a day. Following fermentation the Cabernet Sauvignon portions for our “Margaret” spent 30 days on skins. Once the wine completed malolactic fermentation it was transferred into French oak barrels. This wine remained in oak for 18 months before being bottled in November 2010.
Our 2009 “Margaret” is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 15% Malbec. The colour is an intense crimson. The nose shows powerful characters of violet, blackberry, and toasty French oak. The palate is muscular and luscious, with rich dark berry fruits combining with lashings of ripe tannin. The finish is intense, but still silky smooth. This wine is easily the most powerful ‘Margaret’ we have released.
This wine will be best enjoyed from 2018 to 2030.
