68% Cabernet Sauvignon
Our ‘Margaret’ Reserve Cabernet Merlot is named after owner Heather Watson’s grandmother.
2005 was a near perfect growing season with patches of rain late in the season. At Woodlands we were able to get all our fruit off just before the rain hit, resulting in very intense perfumed wines with excellent tannin ripeness.
Our 2005 ‘Margaret’ was hand picked in late – March from our original south facing planting of Merlot and Malbec and the best parcel of our north-east facing planting of Cabernet Sauvignon. Our 2005 ‘Margaret’ also comprises 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from one our our south facing blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 1975.
After harvest, the Merlot and Malbec portion was crushed into small open fermentors. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion of this wine was crushed into small closed fermentors. The wine was fermented at temperatures ranging from 20 to 24 degrees Celsius, and was pumped over three times a day. Near the end of fermentation, the wine was pressed and transferred into French oak barrels to complete primary fermentation in barrel.
Following primary fermentation, the wine was racked and returned to oak where it underwent malolactic fermentation (“malo”). After malo the wine was racked again and transferred back into barrel. Our 2005 ‘Margaret’ remained in oak for a total of 18 months, of which 40% was new, 40% was one year old and 20% was two years old.
Our 2005 ‘Margaret’ is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 14% Malbec.
Crimson colour, lovely toasty nose, very rich and perfumed in a big style. Massive aromatic vanilla, cedar, mint and char. Lovely seamless palate- great power. Fantastic wine.
