Grape Varieties

With our Margaret, we aim for a more French style – with a large percentage of the blending varieties Merlot and Malbec and extended aging in oak to provide character and backbone.

Our 2002 Margaret was picked over the course of April from our west facing plantings of Merlot and Malbec and our east facing planting of Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to the extremely dry conditions in 2002, our Cabernet Sauvignon yielded a mere 1.2 tonnes per acre while our Merlot and Malbec returned 2 tonnes per acre. The low crops provided fruit of extraordinary density and integrity.

After harvest, the Cabernet portion was crushed into small closed fermentors while the Merlot and Malbec were crushed into small open fermentors. Following primary fermentation, all the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in tank. Following malo, the wine was transferred into new French oak barrels where it remained for 18 months.

Our 2002 Margaret is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec and 8% Merlot.

Brick red colour. Cedar and briar patch notes on the nose. Very concentrated  blueberry and blackcurrant characters with a  drying finish. Still needs time.
